What is a Mentor and do I need one?

The literal meaning of a mentor is “trusted advisor”, however it goes far deeper than that.

Mentoring is giving guidance to the important people surrounding you. As a mentor, we give help to others to show them the best possible direction to go in.

Mentors have extensive experience in many aspects that we as new businesses may not have seen or dealt with. Having a mentor by your side, means having an accountability partner, a fresh set of eyes and a different perspective. It’s important to choose a mentor who you can build a relationship with therefore you trust them.

“Experiences are one of the most valuable benefits of our career”

Let’s look at some of the reasons why a business mentor can be really helpful in your business.

1 Advice

By having a mentor in your business you are giving yourself a chance to receive extra advice. While we have many people in our lives who can give us great advice on a daily basis including family members and good friends that we often lean on we have to understand many of these people do not have the business skills to help further our work and to build our growth.

Mentors are experienced in this field. They are able to advise and offer ideas, even a different view point than perhaps we wouldn’t get otherwise.

2 A Sounding Board

When was the last time you spent a half hour just throwing ideas at someone?

With a mentor you can sit down and throw ideas around and brainstorm everything. Mentors know exactly which questions to ask you and in turn will give you a lot to think about.

A mentor will ask challenging and thought-provoking questions to get you warmed up and to establish a baseline of where you are going and where you want to go. Thinking and feeling out your work and your life balance is extremely important to build your business.

3 Network

Many mentors I have met over the years have grown their networks on a wide scale. Their vast network is a place for you to lean on. While having a mentor, they can suggest people from their networks to connect to and to even find opportunities through others. Mentors will help you grow your network as well.

4 Sharpen Your Skills

It’s really difficult building a business and you need a lot of patience, time and effort.Holding on to your business and making sure it grows is even harder.

Your business requires you to sharpen up your skills as often as you can. We learn every day and it is important to make sure we are learning in the best direction forward.

Having a mentor by your side will help you develop  all these skills and a lot more.

5 Building Confidence

What is better than encouragement? Encouragement with someone you trust!

A mentor as we know now is someone we build a relationship with therefore you trust them. A mentor can encourage you to move forward while offering you guidance and helping you to build your confidence in areas you may be struggling with.

You will be able to work together to understand your journey.

“A great mentor

will also help you create

a life of meaning”
